The Chronicle: December 2004
The Chronicle: December 2004

Author: The Rev. John C. N. Hall

Story: How to Begin?

Undoubtedly you have heard that Saint Matthew's is poised for a growth spurt. In 2005 we will be focused on expanding our congregation's ministries by developing thirty-three acres of land on Germann Road east of McQueen Road. The new development could ultimately include a large church campus, separate food bank buildings, an elementary and middle school, and possibly a high school or assisted care facility.
"Lofty goals," you might think to yourself. And then come all the questions, "What do we do first?" "How do we get started?" "How to begin?"
In last month's edition of The Chronicle I wrote to you with these words:
"In the coming months the congregation will begin to write the next chapter. Individuals and small groups will be asked to dream a new dream, and to prepare a new place for the future of Saint Matthew's. Members will be part of tomorrow by planning for ministry with those who are not yet here. All will be given the opportunity to seek God's next step for Saint Matthew's."
So, then, how do we begin?
By listening.
Starting in January we will begin a process of intentional listening. As fellow members of a congregation we will listen to each other. Together we will tell of our dreams for our place of worship. What does it look like? Whom does it serve? How does it feel? What ministries does it house? We will share with each other, and listen to each other. We will speak of our hopes, our concerns, and our dreams. We will offer to God, and to each other, our joys for our future and our connections to our past.
On Saturday, January 29, 2005 at 10:00 a.m., you will want to be present for our Annual Meeting. Here you will be given an overview of the opportunity God has placed before us. This gathering will also mark the beginning of a series of small group meetings in which each member of our congregation, and each organization within our congregation, will have the opportunity to share in the excitement of our future together.
We need to hear from each other as we commence this new work together. We need to hear from God, as well, as we prayerfully seek to follow fearlessly where he leads. What a great way to begin. By listening.
